A concerning clip was recently shared by a TikTok user who goes by @arif.positif, after he travelled through a portion of the Klang River, and displayed just how polluted it really is. In the clip, Arif panned the camera to give a panoramic view of the river’s surroundings – and it was not good to say the least.

“Heaps of trash. It’s endless and full of it. This is sad to see. We need to do something guys, this cannot be. It cannot been like this and we need to do something about it,” added Arif in the video.

Through Arif’s view, the browning water was filled with a variety of trash items, including plastic water bottles, food containers, vegetative debris, hazardous waste, and plenty more.

Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Arif, who works in corporate sustainability as his full-time job, said that he hopes the clip will amplify the message of managing our waste as Malaysians, to ensure something like this does not continue to happen. Arif also mentioned how waste management requires collaboration from various stakeholders, no matter what country one comes from.

“The authorities should continue deploying innovative solutions utilising technology and to ensure effective enforcement of environmental protection laws. We, as common citizens, also need to do our part to not contribute towards the pollution, and educate those around us, especially our closest circles,” said Arif to WORLD OF BUZZ.

Garnering a massive response online, multiple Malaysians unfortunately alluded to being aware of this circumstance at the Klang River, with people who frequent and are nearby its location admitting to having seen people throw trash there before.

“I always see people throwing trash in rivers. There needs to be CCTV cameras at every bridge so we can identify them and take action moving forward,” commented one user.

Another user also stated that due to the Klang River being very long in nature, there’s a possibility that pollutants from other districts along where the body of water is located, travels through it, thereby affecting it as a whole.

Nonetheless, one user even said that the Klang River has been in a bad state for many, many years, and that there needs to be authoritative intervention on the matter so that a resolution can finally be reached.

I’ve always heard it was polluted but never knew it was this bad. Heaps of rubbish ocean-bound, coming from all kinds of sources. It’s really heartbreaking to see this. Can we do something to solve this? #pollution #riverpollution
