A netizen recently took to TikTok and shared her experience of spending a lot of money vacationing at Pulau Pangkor, Perak.

An up-and-coming holiday destination, though not as popular as Pulau Langkawi, the prices were hyper-inflated, probably due to incoming tourists running away from the more expensive location up north.

Here are some videos of this netizen recollecting her travels to the island.

“Pulau Pangkor is not a tourist-friendly destination. Even though it is a duty-free island, they are not well equipped to cater to would-be shoppers,” they wrote.

“People here are not helpful and they don’t allow you to shop for a lot of stufff despite it being a duty-free destination. You’d be better off vacationing in Hatyai. The seafood is much cheaper. I went to Pangkor during the off season. I can’t imagine what it’d be like if it was during peak season.”

To give you an idea of how expensive things were, here is a rant about the food prices she paid during her holiday.

“I paid RM75 for a 600-700g Barramundi, which beat the price that I would pay at KLCC or Pavilion. The chairs were full of mould, service was not on point, and the food was not that good,” they explained.

“We paid RM142 for the meal, because we chose to have plain water with our meal. Even Singapore is cheaper than Pangkor.”

Let’s hope that things do improve in the future. How are we supposed to support local tourism when going overseas is way cheaper?
