Just take a look outside and you can barely see anything, thanks to the thick haze that has been the bane of our lives these past few weeks. Not only is this terrible for our health since the smoke is wreaking havoc on our respiratory systems but it’s also really bad for eyesight as well.

It looks like more and more Malaysians are feeling unwell!

Health Ministry’s head of ophthalmology services Dr Nor Fariza Ngah said that the number of patients with haze-related illnesses has increased up to 30%.

The Star reported that many patients are seeking medical treatment and they come in all age range.

She added that the majority of these patients are suffering from allergic conjunctivitis which is an eye inflammation caused by an allergic reaction to substances (such as the haze). This is quite a common condition but the number of cases has increased recently due to the haze.

Healthline states that symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis include red, itchy, watery, and burning eyes. Sometimes you may wake up with puffy eyes as well. It is recommended that patients use eye drops to relieve symptoms and stay indoors so that the effects of the haze will be minimised. In addition, there was an increase in patients experiencing dry eyes as well.

Dr Nor Fariza said that they understand that it is haze season now and they have informed the hospitals and clinics to be prepared with the increase in patients. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said, “The director-general of health will also continuously update the public through announcements on our social media sites, as well as press statements.”

Take care and stay safe during this haze season, everyone!
