News about an Asian doctor being violently dragged off a flight in the United States recently took the world by storm.
In light of recent events, some media outlets decided to publish exposés about Dr. Dao, revealing that he was a poker champion and that he apparently had his medical licence suspended for trading drugs for sex with another man.
According to the Daily Mail, Dr. Dao allegedly had his licence suspended from 2003 to 2015. Currently, he is allowed to practise but has limited access to his patients.
In the report, it appears that the doctor was found to have had sex with his male patient, who attended the same church as him. He also allegedly supplied drugs like Oxycontin to the patient in exchange for sexual favours.
This information spread to other news media outlets, and was soon met with a slew of negative feedback from netizens.
Many of them have defended Dr. Dao, saying that his past transgressions have nothing to do with him being violently assaulted by security officers.
New York-based journalist Benjamin Norton also took to Twitter to condemn the media outlets writing about the doctor’s criminal history.
He pointed out that victims of police brutality and corporate violence often become subjects of scrutiny by the media instead of highlighting the faults of the perpetrators.
Things have gotten even more confusing now, because some netizens and journalists on Twitter have pointed out that there are in fact two Dr. Daos and they could have been mixed up in the midst of this media circus!
The rumour that the David Dao who was assaulted on the flight is not the same David Dao who had his licence suspended is quickly circulating all over Twitter.
However, this rumour hasn’t been confirmed by reliable media sources for now.
Although there is a chance Dr. David Dao may have committed crimes in the past, this information has nothing to do with the current issue at hand, and does not justify him being violently assaulted by officers on a flight he was meant to be on.
One thing’s for sure, though. United Airlines will be hearing from Dr. Dao’s lawyers very soon!
