In this day and age, virginity still seems to be an issue between couples, especially those who are looking to get married soon. It’s usually the woman who has to bear with the indignity of this question, as no one thinks of asking the man whether they are still a virgin or not. Besides, testing whether the hymen, long associated with the “presence” of virginity, is flawed, as it can get torn during many activities other than sexual intercourse.

Yet, people are still asking for “proof” of virginity and recently, Dr Amalina Bakri shared on Twitter how a patient approached her and asked her for a virginity check-up. She said, “A girl asked me this question, ‘Doctor, how do I prove to my fiance and his family that I am a virgin? Is there any medical check-up that can be used as evidence because they have asked for proof?’ First of all, I cannot believe that someone would ask such a thing.”

She said that she was shocked and sad that the girl’s fiance and family would even ask for such evidence. In response, she shared an article written by Professor Dr Imelda Balchin that explains the hymen and how its presence or absence is a very flawed and imperfect way to determine virginity.

Basically, Professor Imelda said that it is a myth that the hymen covers the vaginal opening fully and only breaks when the woman has intercourse for the first time. A broken hymen or one that does not necessarily bleed during intercourse for the first time does not mean the woman is not a virgin. Take note, please!

In fact, Professor Imelda added that it’s normal for a girl’s hymen to be flexible and perforated as it enables her to have normal puberty, especially when she menstruates. A girl who has a hymen that perfectly covers her vaginal opening with no holes will make it hard for her to have proper menstruation, and she actually needs to go for an operation.

She also confirms that it’s very normal for girls to break their hymen when they do vigorous activities or sports, so it’s not a foolproof virginity test when it’s discovered that the girl does not have a hymen anymore. She also said that there have been cases where wives had intercourse with their husbands for the first time and their hymens remained intact.

Of course, netizens have own their opinions about this couple and most of them condemned the man, saying that it was unfair for the fiancee. They asked the girl to ask him to prove his virginity as well. Many of them asked her to dump him and said he was not a good man. They advised her to think properly before marrying into such a family as she would suffer next time.
