The success of the renowned Indian actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay, popularly known as “Thalapathy”, in the 2026 Tamil Nadu state assembly elections made waves far beyond India, resonating deeply with Malaysia’s vast Tamil diaspora.

Following his swearing-in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 10 May 2026, he received an unexpected congratulatory message from Malaysia’s opposition coalition, Perikatan Nasional, which lauded his triumph as a rejection of “divisive and discriminatory politics”. Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim also offered his congratulations, emphasising the deep, generational historical and cultural ties between Malaysia and Tamil Nadu.

Celebrities transitioning into politics is hardly new, with notable global figures including former US President Ronald Reagan, ex-California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, US President Donald Trump, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Malaysia is no exception to this trend, having seen numerous public figures try their hand at governance. Here are the four most prominent Malaysian celebrities who successfully transitioned into public office by winning seats in either Parliament or a state assembly.

Khairy Jamaluddin

Currently making a name for himself as a celebrity radio DJ and host of the popular ‘Keluar Sekejap‘ podcast after his defeat in the Sungai Buloh Parliamentary constituency during the 15th General Election (GE15), former Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, affectionately known as KJ, is often assumed to have transitioned into a celebrity only after his foray into politics. However, few know that KJ actually began his professional career on screen as a television presenter.

Equipped with a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) from the University of Oxford and a master’s degree in Legal and Political Theory from University College London (UCL), KJ started in the late 1990s as a journalist and TV presenter on NTV7’s current affairs show, ‘Dateline Malaysia. Following the passing of former Finance Minister Tun Daim in 2024, KJ reminisced about his broadcasting roots, revealing that he made his official on-air debut in 1998 and that it was Tun Daim who had given him the job, an opportunity for which he remains forever grateful.

KJ eventually transitioned from media into politics, initially serving as a policy aide to Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi (who later became his father-in-law) before winning the Rembau parliamentary seat in 2008. He went on to serve three consecutive terms as a Member of Parliament (MP) while concurrently climbing the party ranks to become UMNO Youth Chief.

He went on to serve in the Cabinets of three different Prime Ministers. These portfolios included:

  • Minister of Youth and Sports (2013–2018)
  • Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation (2020–2021)
  • Minister of Health (2021–2022)

Following a temporary exit from frontline politics and a highly successful multi-year stint on mainstream media, KJ recently made a full-circle return to active party politics by officially rejoining UMNO.

Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil

When Anwar was forming his Cabinet after being sworn in as Prime Minister in November 2022, one of the most popular recommendations to helm the Ministry of Communications was Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil. This was due to the Lembah Pantai MP’s extensive background in Malaysia’s creative and performing arts scene before entering frontline politics.

While Fahmi holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University, he spent years establishing himself as a theatre performer, writer, and actor. As a long-standing member of the Five Arts Centre collective, he performed in notable stage works, including Checkpoint Theatre’s ‘Atomic Jaya’ (2003) and ‘Second Link’ (2006).

Besides that, Fahmi also featured in the 2006 TV series ‘Gol & Gincu’, hosted the political satire interview programme ‘The Fairly Current Show’, and joined the Taman Medan Community Arts Project in 2012 to address local youth issues through performing and visual arts. His role in the ‘Gol & Gincu’ series is the most well-known, with Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor jokingly calling him ‘Gol & Gincu’ when the duo met in April 2024.

Channelling these communicative talents into public advocacy, he joined Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) in 2010 and served as the party’s Communications Director from 2013 to 2022. His major electoral breakthrough came during the 14th General Election (GE14) in 2018, where he contested and won the Lembah Pantai parliamentary seat under Pakatan Harapan (PH), succeeding Nurul Izzah Anwar.

After successfully retaining the parliamentary seat in GE15, Fahmi was appointed as Minister of Communications and Digital. In December 2023, a Cabinet reshuffle took place, resulting in the Ministry being separated into two: the Ministry of Communications and the Ministry of Digital, with Fahmi continuing to helm the former.

Datuk Dira Abu Zahar

Datuk Khaidhirah Abu Zahar, widely known as Dira, was a familiar face on Malaysian television, establishing herself as an accomplished actress, director, and TV presenter before stepping into the political spotlight. Holding a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), she formally made her political debut representing UMNO.

When launching her campaign for the November 2021 Melaka State Election under the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition banner, she aimed to follow in the footsteps of her late father, former Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Abu Zahar Ithnin. She then made history by winning the Rim state seat with a majority of 1,327 votes, becoming the first former actress in Malaysia to be elected as a state assembly member (ADUN).

Within UMNO, Dira holds a significant rank at both the national and divisional levels. She serves as an appointed member of the UMNO Supreme Council, placing her among the party’s national decision-makers. At the divisional level, she holds the rank of Vice Chief of the UMNO Jasin Division, having previously served as the Puteri UMNO Jasin Division Chief.

Meanwhile, in the Melaka State Government hierarchy, Dira has steadily advanced through legislative and executive appointments. On 27 December 2021, she was appointed Deputy Speaker of the Melaka State Legislative Assembly. Following a state cabinet restructuring under Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh on 6 April 2023, she was elevated to a Deputy EXCO Member.

Altimet

Syed Ahmad Syed Abdul Rahman, famously known by his stage name Altimet, made a high-profile transition from chart-topping hip-hop icon to frontline lawmaker. Before joining politics, Altimet established himself as a pioneering figure in Malaysian hip-hop as a member of the seminal group Teh Tarik Crew alongside Mizz Nina and DJ Fuzz, before embarking on a successful solo career with hits like Amboi.

After formally retiring from live music performances on his 40th birthday, he officially joined PKR in April 2021, citing a desire to improve the local social landscape and advocate for the welfare of creative artists.

Within PKR’s political hierarchy, Altimet rapidly rose through the party ranks at the divisional level. In May 2022, he was elected as Chief of the PKR Ampang Division, taking charge of grassroots organisational leadership in a key Selangor constituency.

His frontline electoral breakthrough came during the August 2023 Selangor State Election, where he was fielded by PH to contest the Lembah Jaya state seat. Altimet secured a victory with a 6,678-vote majority against his Perikatan Nasional opponent (26,298 votes to 19,620 votes).
