University fees can be very expensive, especially if you come from an underprivileged background.

With that said, what lengths would you go to to pay your university fees?

Kenya West took to his Twitter profile to showcase how a 25-year-old university student in Nairobi was caught dressed like a girl in order to participate in a female chess tournament. He did this in an attempt to win the prize money so that he could use it to make his university payments, and he almost managed to pull it off!

Kenya West wrote, “Stanley Omondi disguised himself and cheated through the Chess Kenya Open as a woman, where he was poised to win Sh500,000 (RM16,667.76). Omondi kept his identity a secret by wearing a niqab (the veil worn by Muslim women to cover their faces) and using the name Millicent Awuor.”

“He was good at it and fooled the staff but his cover was blown when he beat the former national champion Gloria Jumba, and Ugandan top player Ampaira Shakira, arousing suspicion from other players and the arbiters. His explanation was that he did it to raise his school fees.”

We’re not going to lie, looking at the pictures, we’re surprised no one noticed he was a man earlier!

According to a report by Hindustan Times, Chess Kenya president, Bernard Wanjala, shared how Omondi almost fooled them all considering donning hijabs and niqabs are normalised there. But, there were other signs.

“One of the red flags we noticed (was) the shoes, he was wearing more masculine shoes than feminine.”

“We also noticed he was not talking, even when he came to collect his tag, he couldn’t speak, ordinarily, when you are playing, you speak to your opponent… because playing a chess game is not war, it’s friendship,” he said.

Well, for Omondi’s case, it wasn’t war nor friendship. It was for his university fees.

While the man did lie his way into the competition, we genuinely hope he gets a scholarship of some sort considering to beat national and top players, he has to be smart.
