Home Minister: Immigration Dept to Immediately Get 600 Bodycams to Improve Its Officers’ Integrity

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has revealed that his Ministry will be providing about 600 units of body cameras for use by the Immigration Department, as part of efforts to improve the agency’s integrity and transparency.

He added that the move was in response to concerns raised by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on the issue of integrity in the immigration service.

BERNAMA quoted Saifuddin Nasution as saying that the Home Ministry’s secretary-general has been instructed to expedite the process so that the 600 body cameras can be provided as soon as possible.

Moreover, he asserted that procurement for the body cameras will be carried out on Monday (28 April).

The Home Minister further revealed that the Prime Minister himself called the Immigration director-general and expressed the need to immediately work on the use of body cameras by immigration officers.

Another initiative to improve public service delivery and strengthen the people’s trust in enforcement agencies includes replacing the manual counters at international airports with the autogate system. 

Saifuddin Nasution elaborated that this would take place in June, in line with the Prime Minister’s wish to speed up the process of entrance and departure by tourists at the country’s border checkpoints.

Recently, there have been several cases involving misconduct by immigration officers at manual counters at international airports.

Last month, a KLIA immigration officer was caught holding 11 foreign passports after allegedly allowing foreigners entry into Malaysia without being checked.

Meanwhile, in February, another immigration officer was caught hiding 12 international passports while sleeping on duty.
