The United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) has expressed their disappointment with Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s government after they disobeyed the order of His Majesty, Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who wanted all Emergency Ordinances to be debated in Parliament in line with Article 150 (3) of the Federal Constitution.
UMNO has since called for his resignation and the resignation of Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, Minister of Law.
“It is even more unfortunate when Tuanku himself revealed that the revocation of the Emergency Ordinances, as announced by the Minister of Law last Monday in Parliament, is very confusing because it has not yet been approved by His Majesty, Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” they said in a statement.
“This action is clearly a form of rebellion against His Majesty, Yang di-Pertuan Agong, and shows that he has turned his back on the principles of the Federal Constitution.”
Anwar submits a motion of no-confidence
Meanwhile, Anwar Ibrahim has submitted a motion of no-confidence on Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin after Istana Negara issued the statement admonishing Law Minister Takiyuddin Hassan’s announcement on the revocation of the emergency ordinances.
The Port Dickson MP held an online press conference after the parliament was adjourned twice today after its lunch break.
He said that the prime minister has committed treason towards the royal institution and criticised Takiyuddin over his announcement of the revocation of the emergency ordinances which had misled the Dewan Rakyat and did not receive the royal assent.
“This is clearly based on the media statement from Istana Negara that rebuked the rude and treasonous behaviour of Takiyuddin Hassan who said that all emergency ordinances were revoked on 21 July, whereas His Majesty wanted it to be tabled and debated in Parliament,” he said.
Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad also addressed this issue in a statement, saying that Muhyiddin Yassin had “deliberately lied to Parliament with regards to the revocation of the Emergency Ordinances”.
“He must know that he has no power to revoke the Ordinances on his own. But still the announcement was made, as if he had the power when such powers is solely in the hands of the King during the Emergency,” the statement said.
Mahathir added that although it was Takiyuddin who had made the announcement, “Muhyiddin cannot absolve himself of the responsibility”.
“Tan Sri Muhyiddin is therefore responsible for this shameful act as also the rest of the Cabinet members.”
“Therefore it is incumbent upon him to resign as Prime Minister and his Cabinet members must follow suit.”
Additionally, the afternoon Parliament session today (28 July) that was supposed to resume at 3.30pm was delayed to 5.15pm as all MPs needed to be swab tested after it was discovered that two ministers tested positive for Covid-19.
At 5.15pm, Deputy Speaker Rashid Hasnon entered the hall and announced that Parliament would once again be postponed to Monday (2 August) after two more individuals in Parliament tested positive for Covid-19.
