Banners are often used to display or notify important messages or subjects. From a way to show dissatisfaction over the handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, to important announcements by city halls.

However, a banner has gone viral recently for what seemed to be the most unimportant and least pressing issue ever. It was a banner made with the sole objective of blocking the sun.

A TikTok video of the banner posted by user @nightraveller_ recently went viral. The video featured a goldfish shop in Bukit Mertajam, Penang called “Uncle Gold Fish” but the accompanying banner is what stole the attention of netizens.

The banner reads, “Don’t know what to print, just blocking the sun only.”

Netizens commended the owner for their sense of humour

The short clip has amassed over 93,000 views and over 10,000 likes. Many users took to the comments section to praise the owner of the shop for their sense of humour and smart marketing move.

One user said, “His objective has been completed, amazing marketing.”

“Good marketing also. Because someone will viral this kind of thing and the name of the shop is spread around with a low cost,” said another.

Some Cantonese speaking users said that the name of the goldfish shop translates to something unusual as well. In Cantonese, the term “Goldfish Uncle” is a slang for a pedophile. According to sources, the origin of the term comes from a man asking a child if they wanted to see goldfishes in order to lure them and eventually abduct them.
