A divorced man in his 30s was caught for khalwat (being in close proximity) with an unmarried woman during a hotel raid in Johor yesterday (13 November).

The raid by the Johor State Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ) happened at a hotel in Taman Desa Tebrau, Johor Bahru, at around 1:30 AM.

The man was only wearing pants with the zipper undone

In a statement, JAINJ explained that when enforcement officers knocked on the door, the man was found shirtless and wearing only pants with the zipper undone.

“He seemed surprised, possibly thinking it was hotel staff knocking. The room was dark, and when the door opened, officers pointed out that his zipper was open. He blushed and quickly fixed it,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, the woman was found conscious on the bed, completely naked under the covers, as confirmed by a female officer.

The couple later admitted to their wrongdoing

According to JAINJ, the man lives in Pontian and commutes daily to Johor Bahru for work. He reportedly rented the hotel room out of fatigue after returning home late from work.

The woman, on the other hand, has a home in Johor Bahru and rents a place with a friend. Both later admitted to their wrongdoing.

The couple was detained for suspected khalwat under Section 27 of the Johor Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment 1997 and taken to the police station for further action.
