An elderly man was caught for khalwat (close proximity between unrelated individuals) after spending the night with a divorced woman in her 30s at a village house in Johor on 9 November.

The Johor State Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ) said the couple was detained after a raid at the house at 9 AM.

A four-year-old child was also present at the house

In a statement, JAINJ said the house was surrounded by enforcement officers to make sure no one could escape.

“The officers knocked on the door while calling out loudly. A man opened it halfway, and when he realised the officers were there, he tried to close it again but couldn’t. They managed to get inside after introducing themselves, and the man looked frightened,” the statement read.

During the inspection, a woman was seen coming out of the bathroom wrapped in a towel, believed to have just finished bathing.

JAINJ officers also found a four-year-old child, belonging to the woman, asleep in the living room.

They claimed they intended to get married

It was also reported that the woman is originally from another district and had been at the house for two days.

The couple claimed they were planning to get married, but said there were still unfinished matters.

“The woman appeared scared, and further investigation revealed that the man is 70 years old, a widower, while the woman is in her 30s, a divorced mother with a child,” JAINJ added.

The couple was then detained under Section 27 of the Johor Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment 1997 on suspicion of khalwat and taken to the police station for further action.
