All hail Chap Fan (Cantonese for mixed rice)! It’s not only delicious but its cheap prices have also kept our wallets safe from “major leakage.” Regardless, have you noticed that the prices are somewhat different on every visit?

In her Instagram post @gigi_li53, a TikToker from China who is based in Malaysia, GiGi recently spoke about mixed rice in Malaysia, where she highlighted the prices that barely remain the same.

“Mixed rice in Malaysia is unique. You’ll never know how much you’re going to spend on the same dishes.”

And yes, GiGi is pointing out the same dishes, calculated by the same cashier on different visits.

GiGi also said that the mixed rice culture in Malaysia is somewhat similar to the one in China. The difference lies in the pricing.

“The price is fixed and you’re free to take whatever dishes you like. That’s in China but here, it’s different.”

“Different cashiers, different pricing”

GiGi then said that at times, Malaysian customers are likely to get different prices for the same dishes on different days, especially when it’s not the same cashier handling the calculation.

“The boss charges you RM15, the lady boss charges you RM16 and the staff might charge you RM17.”

GiGi added and said that she has no clue about how the price of mixed rice in Malaysia is calculated.

“Until today, I still don’t know how they calculate the price for mixed rice in Malaysia. I think it’s based on their mood.” GiGi assumed.

Malaysian customers could relate to what GiGi had to say about the mixed rice pricings in Malaysia, and agreed that the calculation method is likely to be the cashier’s mood.

“It’s definitely based on their mood! Regardless of how they calculate, it’ll never be more than RM6.”

“I’m still clueless until today.”

“I agree. Same dishes, different prices on different dates. It’s mostly an additional RM1 every time.”

Honestly, we’re not sure how the dishes are calculated either. Inflation, or mood? What do you think? Is economy rice not so “economy” anymore?
