Since Chinese New Year, several heartwarming videos have been making waves across the internet, touching the hearts of many Malaysians. If you haven’t caught wind of it yet, the videos were released by PETRONAS in conjunction with their 50th anniversary, unveiling their journey of fulfilling the dreams of three children with special needs!

These heartwarming tales not only stirred emotions but also showcased the boundless potential of compassion. Here’s what we know about this heartwarming initiative. 

 

It’s all part of the PETRONAS 50 Dreams project

PETRONAS has long been celebrated for its emotionally stirring short films that tug on the heartstrings, and their new 50 Dreams project is no exception!

Celebrating its momentous 50th anniversary, PETRONAS has embarked on a heartfelt mission to uplift the spirits of people in need by extending support through both generous donations and dedicated volunteer efforts throughout the festive season.

Guided by the powerful mantra “The Dream of One Becomes The Will of Many,” 50 individuals, each with their own challenges and inspiring dreams, are treated to a special experience to uplift and honour their resilience!

In the captivating video titled “PETRONAS 50 Dreams: A Journey of Unity and Triumph,” PETRONAS beautifully captured the journey of three Malaysian children with varying needs whose dreams were fulfilled by PETRONAS. With its powerful message of compassion, it’s no surprise that this documentary has garnered over 4 million views!

1. Mervin Soo Jin Shung: a basketball coach to be

Meet Mervin, a young basketball enthusiast from Terengganu with an indomitable spirit! Despite being born with Cerebral Palsy (Spastic Diplegia), Mervin’s passion for basketball knows no bounds. Not only is he an avid fan of Malaysian basketball player Heng Yee Tong, but he also dreams of becoming a basketball coach to empower others in the community.

Captivated by Mervin’s passion and courage, PETRONAS orchestrated a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for him. Transported to Kuala Lumpur, Mervin not only had the chance to meet his idol, but also got to coach team PETRONAS Sports & Recreational Club (KSRP) in a friendly match against a team of National players. The lucky boy also got to witness the MBA finals, where Heng Yee Tong played for Johor Tigers against NS Matrix!

2. Atikah Lim: a resilient cancer fighter

When Atikah received her stage four ovarian cancer diagnosis, her parents were devastated. However, amidst the turmoil, they made a resolute decision: to set aside their worries and dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to her care. Together, as a family, they have exemplified remarkable resilience and strength, standing united in the face of challenges!

Moved by her resilience, PETRONAS organised a surprise birthday party for Atikah by the sea—a dream she had for a long time that finally came true as she turned 10. Alongside heartfelt gifts, Atikah’s friends were warmly welcomed to share in the joyous occasion. The sparkle in Atikah’s eyes proves that this was truly an unforgettable moment! We promise you you’ll cry when you see her reaction during the big surprise. ?

3. Sim Xin Yi: a loving sister and daughter

Born with a hearing impairment, Xin Yi’s journey has been marked by challenges, yet she has always found strength in the unwavering support of her sister, who learned sign language to communicate with her. Despite her hearing impairment, Xin Yi has secured a job and taken care of herself with admirable independence, a source of immense pride for her family.

Xin Yi’s deepest longing is to hear her own name being called, a desire that PETRONAS graciously fulfilled through their compassionate gesture. Alongside the gift of a hearing aid, Xin Yi has also been enrolled in speech therapy classes. Her unwavering determination and optimism serve as a beacon of inspiration, reminding us all of the boundless resilience of the human spirit!
