It’s been around 11 months since Covid-19 came into our lives. Many things are uncertain during these times but one thing we’re sure about is that the effort put in by our frontliners should not be taken lightly as they’re battling this pandemic tirelessly on a daily basis while risking their own personal safety and some even missing their family for months.
For this reason alone, our frontliners need to be treated with the utmost respect, but apparently, this isn’t the case. Twitter user, Suhaizam, shared the taunts his sister, a nurse, faces every day due to her job.
He tweeted regarding the hostility his sister faces from Malaysians in situations where:
- People refusing to go on the same elevator with her as she was in her nurse’s uniform
- Shopkeepers refused to let her buy things due to her uniform
- She got scolded when she went to fill petrol in the morning as some were saying that her uniform “carries virus”.
To those who asked if her uniform is completely germ-free, Suhaizam’s sister replied in anger saying that previously if anyone were to get sick, it’s not like the germs they contracted originated from the hospital.
“When your child is sick, is it because of the germs from the hospital?”
“Absolutely not! If you were actually aware with hospital procedures, you would know.”
His sister even reassured that in terms of uniform, nurses don’t deal with Covid-19 patients wearing their white uniforms. The white uniform is only worn until they sign in for duty at the hospital, and then they’ll immediately change into their Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). After that, the uniform will only be worn when they’re heading back home.
Even then, the nurses make sure to take a shower in the hospital AND another shower once they reach home. Their uniforms are also washed thoroughly.
Despite their bravery and the lengths they go to protect us and themselves, it’s sad to see how some treat our frontliners. Moving forward, let’s not let their uniforms blind us from the service they’re doing. It’s good to be careful & hygienic but never at the risk of hurting others. After all, if we’re ever in a hospital, they’re the ones we look out to care for us.
