Our nation is currently battling a season of political, economic, and social uncertainty. Much of the news that has been going around recently has been largely discouraging but there is still hope. If you’re a law-abiding Malaysian citizen aged 21 years and above, that means you’re eligible to register as a voter!

If you’re new to this whole registration thing, don’t worry, we got you covered. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to register online as a Malaysian voter and have your say on the future leadership of our country.

In the past, you’d need to take a number and wait for AGES to physically register yourself with the Election Commission (EC) at your nearest post office or at SPR branches around the country. Thankfully, SPR developed a much more convenient method of registering online! Here’s how to go about the process:

1. Create an account via the MySPR Daftar portal

The first step to registration is filling up your personal details on the MySPR Daftar portal. Do check to see if you’ve met all the required criteria to identify whether you’re eligible:

Voters must be:

  • Malaysian citizens
  • 21 years old or older
  • Residing in the area you’re registered to vote under
  • Law-abiding citizens that have never been barred or disqualified by laws in force

If you meet all these aspects, you’re cleared to vote! Just fill in your full name and address, a valid phone number and email, and upload a picture of your MyKad (IC). You also have to upload a selfie of yourself with your IC for verification purposes.

2. Activate your account

Once you’re done with that, it shouldn’t take too long for the Election Commission (EC) to get back to you. You’ll most likely receive an email from them to activate your account with a subsequent TAC code sent to the phone number you registered with to confirm this activation process.

After this is completed, you can log back into your MySPR Daftar portal and change or update information about your personal details.

3. Fill up Form (Borang A)

After logging back in, click on the Borang A button on the main page. Here, you have to fill up more specifications on your personal details (e.g. race, religion) and acquire a witness to register their details for confirmation purposes.

Once you’ve completed and submitted this form, you will be sent another TAC code. Confirm that the code was sent to you and the processing of your application will take place!

And there you have it! If you’re not sure whether you’ve already registered as a voter, you can double-check here. It’s better to be safe than sorry! If you face any issues while registering, you can always reach out to the Election Commission on their website for assistance.

While the Dewan Rakyat passed a bill earlier this year to enable automatic voter registration and to lower the voting age to 18 years old, it will take some time for this ruling to come to effect. The next general election is set to take place in 2023 but we want all eligible Malaysians to be registered and prepared in the event of a snap election.
