Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil recently commented about the controversy surrounding national badminton athlete Lee Zii Jia, who was spotted wearing an upside-down Malaysian flag at the 2024 BWF World Tour Finals in China on 11 December.

Labelling it as a “critical error”, Fahmi urged all parties to give space to the authorities to investigate the incident and for the public to not be overzealous when commenting about it on social media.

Sinar Harian quoted the Communications Minister as saying that his Ministry took note of the incident, as well as Lee’s apology, but considered the negligence as critical.

He asserted,

“For me, it’s a glaring error, a jersey worn by a prominent athlete and representing our country with the Malaysian flag.”

The Communications Minister urged the public not to go overboard when commenting about the incident online

Meanwhile, Fahmi revealed that his side hadn’t received any reports from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) regarding any comments touching on sensitive issues regarding the controversial incident.

Accordingly, the Communications Minister advised the public not to cross the line when commenting online about the incident, or any other issues for that matter, as comments can be misinterpreted and lead to provocative situations.
