The management of a factory in Johor has come under fire after a viral video showed an upside-down Jalur Gemilang being displayed at the premises.

According to the video shared on the Facebook page of Penyulam Aksara and Community Roda Johor – CRJ, the factory is located in Senai, Johor, and the upside-down flag was spotted on Sunday (11 January).

It is understood that the incident was noticed by a member of the public who attempted to alert the management about the matter, but the building was unoccupied.

In an updated post this morning (12 January), CRJ confirmed that the flag’s position has since been rectified, and enforcement action has been taken against the management of the factory.

The factory was ordered to close

Wong Bor Yang, the assemblyperson for Senai, addressed the incident this morning, saying that not only was the position of the Jalur Gemilang corrected, but the factory has also been ordered to close by the Kulai Municipal Council (MPK) under Section 49(2) of the Business and Industrial Trade Licensing By-Laws (MPKu) 2019, effective today.

The director of the factory, a foreign national, has been arrested by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to assist with the investigation, Bor Yang said in his statement, shared on his Facebook.

Bor Yang, however, deemed the municipal council’s order overly severe.

“As the matter is now under police investigation, it’s better if the municipal council could wait before taking such a drastic action against the factory.”

At the District Development Action Committee (JTPD) Meeting No. 8/2025, the President of MPKu, Tuan Mohd Hafiz bin Aliman, assured that monitoring patrols would be carried out continuously.

According to Bor Yang, Hafiz said that no fines would be imposed on those who made unintentional mistakes in issues related to the inverted display of the Jalur Gemilang and state flags, which have gone viral elsewhere.

The Senai assemblyperson stated:

“I hope that this closure directive is intended solely to facilitate the authorities’ investigation process, and not to serve as a form of punishment or penalty before any actual offence has been proven.”

“Kulai is a key international investment hub, making operational stability essential for sustaining investor trust.”

Previously, UMNO Youth Chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh said that punishments should be imposed against those who disrespect the Jalur Gemilang. PDRM, on the other hand, has yet to release an official statement on the matter.
