According to folklore and some locals, townships in Sabah were once infested by a type of spine-chilling creature known as Balan-Balan, and its very presence has lingered on to this very day.
Unfortunately for those who are afraid of the supernatural, Balan-Balan is not just a Malaysian thing, but is all over the ASEAN region based on this Facebook update.
Identified by different names, Balan-Balan is a form of dark magic brought to life by the recitation of mantras, before resuming its form of a flying head with entrails attached.
The Balan-Balan feeds on the blood of women who have just given birth, new born babies and corpses – which gives the practitioner power, beauty and even immortality.
According to stories told by locals, there are two types of Balan-Balan – the flying head version as seen in this video, and another which takes the form of a human being.
It is said that you should not call on the Balan-Balan, or it may pay you a visit, wherever you are – like a food delivery rider.
Do you have a personal experience with the Balan-Balan? Isn’t it astounding that the Balan-Balan can actually be a shared entity across the ASEAN region?
