English Premier League champions Manchester City may be dipping their toes in the Malaysian football scene soon, according to reporting by Free Malaysia Today.
City, who became the first team to ever retain the EPL title for two consecutive seasons after pipping rivals Liverpool by one point to amass a 98-point total, is looking to collaborate with the Malaysian football scene. This could see them taking over a local football club!
Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said today at a press conference alongside Manchester City group CEO Ferran Soriano that any collaboration with the club would not interfere with FAM’s cooperation deal with the Japanese Football Association that was announced last month. He added that Manchester City’s cooperation with Malaysia would be the club’s first foray into the South East Asian market, and said,
“Hopefully, Malaysia is the destination of choice and will be the base for South East Asia.”
Soriano lauded the efforts of Malaysia to improve the local football scene while also acknowledging the passionate fan base of the sport here, telling the assembled press, “As a global football organisation we would like to explore opportunities to do things together with the Malaysian football family.”
“While we don’t know exactly what it is, what is clear is that the next decade, Malaysian football is going to grow significantly.”
That’s certainly exciting news for local football fans! What do you think of having a Man City-run local club? Let us know in the comments!
