An elderly Malaysian woman was tricked by a video created with artificial intelligence (AI), prompting her to travel all the way from Perlis to Kedah to buy medicine supposedly sold by a local independent preacher.
She travelled to a school in Kedah specifically to purchase eye medicine claimed to be sold by Ustaz Wadi Annuar.
“The AI Videos falsely showed me promoting the products”
In response to the incident, Ustaz Wadi later took to Facebook to address the matter, confirming that the video in question was indeed fake.
“An elderly grandmother using a walking stick travelled all the way from Perlis to my school to buy eye medicine that was supposedly sold by me. This incident is very upsetting as it deceives and harms innocent elderly people,” the post read.

In addition to the eye medicine, members of the public also contacted him to complain about other products.
“They were misled by videos appearing to show me promoting apricots, eye medicine, prophetic water, knee pain medicine, and more. AI ‘lip-sync’ technology was used to synchronise the lip movements with the speech, making the videos appear authentic.”
“I’ve never sold or promoted them”
Ustaz Wadi later clarified that while some of the products do exist and have reached buyers, he never sold or promoted them.
“All of these advertisements are fake and created by irresponsible parties. To those behind this scam, remember that deceiving others brings no goodness or blessings. Stop this behaviour and use your energy for something beneficial,” he said.
In response, Ustaz Wadi’s team urged the public to exercise caution and verify information from official sources before trusting any advertisements, to avoid being misled.
