Breakfast in Malaysia is incomplete without classic favorites like roti canai, nasi lemak, or teh tarik. These dishes and drinks are what Malaysians crave when they wake up, enjoyed everywhere and at any time of the day!
Nasi lemak, roti canai, and teh tarik recently stole the spotlight at an exclusive event titled “Malaysian Breakfast Culture: Protecting Intangible Cultural Heritage” in Geneva.
“The event took place alongside the 56th session of the Human Rights Council”
According to Bernama, the Permanent Mission of Malaysia to the United Nations and International Organisations in Geneva organised an event to showcase Malaysia’s rich culinary heritage.
For the first time, iconic Malaysian breakfast dishes such as nasi lemak, roti canai and teh tarik were featured at Palais des Nations, the United Nations headquarters in Geneva.
About 100 diplomats, along with UN and international organisation officials, attended the event and enjoyed the diverse flavours that represent Malaysia’s multicultural society.
Preserving and celebrating Malaysia’s culinary traditions!
Malaysia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Datuk Nadzirah Osman, mentioned the importance of these popular dishes for Malaysia’s cultural heritage.
To protect Malaysia’s breakfast culture, with its traditions and cooking methods for famous dishes, Malaysia aims to list Malaysian Breakfast Culture on UNESCO’s important cultural traditions known as the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by March 2023.
Nadzirah hopes that Malaysia’s nomination will get support from member states during the selection at the 19th Intergovernmental Committee of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in Paraguay this December.
