A 38-year-old man in China has been taking care of his fiancée (at the time) for the past 10 years after an accident completely changed her life.

Just before their wedding, Li Mei got into a serious car accident and was rushed to the ICU, where doctors issued three critical condition notices.

He took care of her every single day

Li’s parents never approved of Shen because of his financial situation, but she never wavered in her decision to marry him.

In 2013, when Shen was hospitalised with acute appendicitis, Li took care of him with love and dedication.

According to the South China Morning Post, Li suffered major damage to the left side of her brain after the accident, and doctors told Shen that even if she pulled through, she might be left in a vegetative state.

Desperate to save her, Shen begged them to do everything they could, and he cared for her every single day.

The accident left her with an IQ of a 5-year-old

Li woke up three months later; however, her cognitive abilities had declined to that of a five-year-old.

Her treatment cost around 5,000 yuan (MYR2,977) a day, and Shen later shared that he had used up all his savings on her care after the accident, often getting by on just two meals a day to make ends meet.

In 2015, Li was finally discharged from the hospital. A nursing home offered her a place to stay and provided free rehabilitation services.

They even gave Shen a job as a nursing assistant, allowing him to earn a living while staying by her side and continuing to care for her.

“I just try to give her the best I can”

A decade after the accident, Shen and Li (now husband and wife) are still happily living together at the nursing home.

Shen ignored his parents’ advice to find a new partner and also turned down Li’s parents’ requests for them to have a child, worried it could affect her health.

“I’ve never seen her as a burden. I just try to give her the best I can,” Shen said.
