Six children were among 10 who were killed during an air strike in Central Gaza on Sunday, July 13. They were waiting to fill their water containers at the al-Nuseirat refugee camp.

According to the BBC, 16 others, including seven children, were injured during the air strike and sent to the Nuseirat’s al-Awda Hospital for treatment.

IDF says it was a “technical error”

In what the Israeli military claimed was supposed to be a strike on Jihad terrorists, a “technical error” instead caused the munition to miss the target by dozens of metres.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) acknowledged the “claim regarding casualties in the area as a result”.

They stated that it is working to reduce civilian harm “as much as possible” and “regrets any harm to uninvolved civilians”.

The incident is currently under review.

Following the air strike, eyewitnesses claimed a drone fired a missile at a crowd of people, both adults and children, queuing with jerry cans next to a water tank to get water.

According to Reuters, many desalination and sanitation facilities in Gaza have been forced to close due to fuel shortages. This has led to worsening water shortages, forcing many to be dependent on collection centres.

As of Sunday, the Gaza Health Ministry confirmed that more than 58,000 people have been killed since the war between Israel and Hamas began in October 2023.
