Just recently, Malaysian celebrity chef, Chef Wan Ismail surprised many followers with his “Kavadi” remark that was left on a post on Aishwarya Rai’s attire at Cannes. Many followers were baffled to see such a remark coming from 1 of the world’s most renowned chefs and they urged an apology from him.

In a statement by PDRM in Sentul, police said they received 1 report regarding the matter, which is being investigated under section 298 of the Penal Code and section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998.

If convicted, Chef Wan will face a jail time of 1 year and a fine.

“She doesn’t even know me & she doesn’t care”

After receiving a lot of criticisms online, in a lengthy IG post @_chefwan58, Chef Wan apologised to those who were upset with his comment. He assured everyone that his intention with the remark was far from insulting one’s faith but merely highlighting the material of the outfit.

“My mind inmediately thought of the material the designer used for her outfit. I see them alot in the religious Taipusam Kavadi in Batu Caves.”

He added that many comments highlighted Aishwarya Rai’s outfit resembling a peacock, hence his Kavadi comment.

“My intention was never to be racist. Not in a million years. I am sorry,” he said.

In his post, Chef Wan also identified himself as a big fan of the Bollywood actress and even apologised to her for the remark. However, the chef doesn’t think his comment will affect the Aishwarya.

“I’m just another big fan of hers, like a drop in the ocean. She doesn’t even know me and she doesn’t care.”

As for the fans who were upset to the extent that a police report was made, Chef Wan said he didn’t know what to feel.

“I didn’t know if I should laugh or cry. To be honest as I find these days we Malaysians are so sensitive on so many issues and so many levels.”

Despite being outspoken, Chef Wan took responsibility for his comment and said he would accept any decisions made by the Court, if there is any.

What do you think of Chef Wan’s remark and apology?
