This Englishman, taking to TikTok, mentioned how chicken chops are not a dish originating from the West.
In his 1-minute video, he rants about how it is not surprising as the English Tikka Masala is not Indian but English through and through.
“In the past 24 hours, I’ve realised that not many Malaysians know that chicken chop is not a Western dish,” he explained.
“It was created right here in Malaysia. I don’t blame Malaysians for thinking that it is a Western dish. It looks like a western dish, it is not typically the kind of dish you would find in this part of the world, and, of course, it is on the western menu when you go to a restaurant.”
“In the 19th century, when the Chinese migrated to Malaysia, specifically the Hainanese, many of them ended up working in British households, and they started to adapt their cooking to the Western palette,” he added.
This is not the first time this Englishman has discussed the differences between English and Malaysian cuisine, but this one certainly hit a ‘nerve’ regarding the famed chicken chop.
“They were the first people to start creating western dishes for British people living in Malaysia, and one of the many dishes they created was chicken chop,” he mentioned.
“This dish even had Worcestershire sauce. It was created for a Western plate, but it is not a Western dish.”
Well, now you know.
