As much as we love Disney’s animation, at some point, we will miss seeing something with a “local touch”. Malaysia has a fair share of good and popular animations, such as Didi & Friends, Boboiboi, and Upin & Ipin.
Upin & Ipin has been around since 2007 and has run for 16 seasons, which are still being broadcasted in our neighboring country, Indonesia.
However, Bali’s Governor, Wayan Koster is not a huge fan of the Malaysian animation, and he has a stern reminder to the youths in his country.
“Say NO to Upin & Ipin”
Despite its long-running broadcast, just recently, Wayan reminded the youths in Indonesia NOT to watch Upin & Ipin to protect Bali from foreign culture.
“Instead of watching the animations from the neigbouring country, you might as well make your own production which will promote the local culture,” Wayan said.
He continued and said, “Stop watching Upin & Ipin. Let’s produce something that will make our culture known.” The governor said that Bali is full of opportunities to make that happen, and urged youngsters not to ever abandon Bali’s culture under any circumstances.
“The foreign culture, technology and modern lifestyle can develop but never leave Bali’s culture behind.”
CNN Indonesia also reported that Wayan suggested youngsters in his country watch Jayaprana Layonsari, 1 of the famous Bali love tales for inspiration on how to live a better life.
“I ask you all to watch Jayaprana Layonsari so that you can learn how to live a better life. Most importantly, we take part in preserving and improving Bali’s culture.”
Do you think the youths in Indonesians should ditch foreign productions to elevate their own culture? On the other hand, should Malaysian film producers ditch foreign inspirations to promote our own culture?
