Just recently, the Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living went viral for claiming that RM200 is more than enough for groceries. Her claim did not sit well with many Malaysians, who said that more was needed and the items in her cart could barely last long.

Just last night (September 20), the minister, Senator Fuziah Salleh broke the silence and responded to the viral video of her going grocery shopping. According to her, it was an old video that found its way back on social media again and it was re-shared by certain parties with political motives. Fuziah, however, did not name any parties.

Fuziah told Harian Metro that the video was taken during her visit to a local supermarket in Langkawi, Kedah back in July but not exactly to prove RM200 is enough for groceries, as highlighted by some people recently. During that time, she was merely highlighting that RM200 was enough for basic necessities.

“In the video, I was trying to prove that RM200 was enough for basic necessities. So, I visited the supermarket myself and bought the items there. My statement in the video was meant for that situation.”

Fuziah also hopes that her explanations will clarify the confusion that netizens may have.

“To those spreading the old video with an agenda, be careful,” Fuziah reminded.

In the video, Fuziah bought multiple items that cost her RM136 – less than the RM200 budget she had on hand. She then said RM200 is more than enough and you don’t need RM500 for groceries, which was taken out of context in the recently-circulated video.

Now that the issue has been clarified, what do you think of it? Is RM200 really enough for basic necessities?
