Imagine being a hawker, selling meatballs for as cheap as RM0.50 per piece, only to be called expensive and compared to an international business powerhouse.

That’s the unfortunate situation our small-time business owners in Malaysia have to endure.

Local roadside hawker, Yayar B. Awang Noh, took to his Facebook page to share how a customer had ordered meatballs and rice for an extremely affordable price of RM3.50 in total from his stall in Pandan Perdana, Kuala Lumpur, only to call his food expensive and compare the price to IKEA’s meatballs.

He wrote, “I apologise. Anyone who has ever stopped by my stall knows how I treat my customers, very gently and I serve generously. But there was one customer earlier, I really had to laser their mouth shut. Because I’ve had it with them many times now”.

The customer allegedly always annoys Yayar B. Awang Noh by constantly asking him to heat up dishes for them, but the final straw came when the customer complained that his RM0.50 meatballs were ‘too expensive‘.

“They stirred the meatballs around and scooped up 4 pieces while asking the price. I told them it was RM2 for 4 pieces. They then took 5 pieces and placed it onto their rice, asking again how much was 5 pieces. It’s RM2.50 for 5 pieces,” he explained.

The customer then replied, “Wah, 50 cents for 1 piece? That’s expensive. MyTOWN’s (IKEA) is only how much and theirs is also bigger!”

“Okay, bring them to my stall then. You are asking for expensive meat but with a price like this, you are still making noise and have the audacity to want to eat the expensive version,” Yayar B. Awang Noh responded to the customer.

The customer then quietly paid RM3.50 in total for their 5 meatballs and rice before going on their way.

Where in the world could you get a proper meal for RM3.50 (albeit there’s no veggies)? But still, that’s cheaper than Menu Rahmah meals!

It is understandable to call out overpriced food when it is truly overpriced, but it is unjustifiable to call RM0.50 meatballs expensive.

If you would like some RM0.50 meatballs, you can find Yayar B. Awang Noh’s stall right across from Guardian at Pandan Perdana.

Be right back, going to get some RM0.50 meatballs for a ridiculously budget-friendly lunch!
