A few months back, the government introduced the RM5 Menu Rahmah initiative to ease the burden of low-income citizens, and since then, the menu has been generally well-received.

It’s not that easy to get a meal for RM5 nowadays aside from the Menu Rahmah, but there is a gem in Bentong, Pahang where you can get a plate of chicken rice for only RM4, and it comes with a bowl of soup. That’s even cheaper than Menu Rahmah!

According to East Coast China Press, the chicken rice vendor, Zeng is not originally from Bentong but he has been in the industry for 11 years now. He learned his skills from a roast meat chef in Tampin in the past.

“I understand what it’s like not to have food”

In an interview with China Press, Zeng admitted that many of his customers wonder how can he sell chicken rice at such a low price. Zeng has a good cause behind the cheap price.

“I know what it’s like not to have money for a single meal because I come from a poor family. So I decided to sell it at an affordable price to the public.”

Zeng’s decision to sell chicken rice for only Rm4 a plate has expectedly kept many customers happy, and to him, it’s one of the greatest satisfactions.

Despite the low price, Zeng assured the people that he does not compromise the food’s quality, which will keep the customers full and happy. With the price of Rm4, Zeng said that he is still able to make a small profit.

In a day, Zeng can sell up to 18 chickens, and up to 25 chickens on weekends and public holidays. Other than chicken rice, Zeng also sells roasted and barbecued pork at a slightly higher price. To cut costs, Zeng hired only 1 assistant to help with the meal and packaging.

We’re truly grateful that there are still many food vendors out there who take not only the customers’ preferences into account but also their financial burden. If you’re in Bentong, have you visited Zeng’s chicken rice place at the Big House Food Court?
