The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) seized a total of 17 motorcycles at the Penang Bridge motorcycle lane during an integrated operation involving the police, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the State Department of Environment (DOE) on Friday night (30 December 2022). The operation took place from 9pm on Friday until earlier this morning in conjunction with the New Year’s Eve celebration.

As reported by Bernama, the 17 motorcycles were seized by PDRM under Section 64(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Meanwhile, JPJ issued 187 summonses during the operation for various traffic offences, with another 150 summonses also issued for various other offences. Besides that, 10 vehicle owners also received a notice under Section 48A of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 (noise emission).

The operation was led by Penang Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) chief Supt Zafri Zolkapli and is part of the effort by the authorities to curb illegal racing activities by street thugs in the state. Speaking of which, Penang deputy police chief Datuk Fisol Salleh earlier today revealed that a total of 475 summonses were issued in a New Year’s Eve special operation throughout the state carried out from 9pm last night.

In this separate operation, PDRM focused on crime prevention and inspection of vehicles, especially motorcycles that have been excessively modified. Moreover, the operation was also to ensure that motorcyclists comply with road safety rules and that their vehicles are in good and safe condition, instead of just ensuring that road tax and driving licence are renewed.

Fisol Salleh asserted,

“Penang recorded one of the highest fatal accidents and we are doing various efforts to reduce it (fatal accidents) especially involving motorcyclists commuting to and from their work place across the island. We are not doing this to make things difficult for them,”

The Penang deputy police chief stressed that the state aims to eradicate street thug activities and illegal racing this year. Towards this end, PDRM has drawn up several strategies, including carrying out inspections and stricter enforcement on workshops modifying vehicles.
