Malaysians were shocked to find out yesterday (August 23) that the Federal Court upheld former Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s conviction and sentence of 12 years in jail, including a fine of RM210 million for being found guilty of embezzling RM42 million in funds belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd.

Following Najib finally being sent to prison after years of court trials, a number of politicians have come up to share their thoughts on the matter.

Recently, former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said that he can now breathe a sigh of relief with the Federal Court’s decision.

In a social media post he wrote, “Today, I along with Malaysians who consistently fight corruption can breathe a sigh of relief with the decision of the Federal Court to uphold the conviction of Najib.”

“It has been proven that our country’s independent judicial system has been able to guarantee justice and restore the country’s damaged dignity.”

He said that it was his will to uphold the independence of the judicial system that led to his resignation as Malaysia’s 8th Prime Minister.

He also conveyed his hopes that justice will prevail and that the independent judiciary continues to be protected without any interference or pressure from any political party.

“The independence and integrity of the judiciary as proven today is the axis of a democratic country. Without an independent judiciary, the democratic system in our country will fail to function and Malaysia will become an authoritarian, corrupt and morally bankrupt country,” he added.

“I pray that Malaysia is completely free from the practice of kleptocracy, away from disasters and that the people can live in peace and prosperity.”

“How could you take credit for that?”

Muhyiddin’s post has garnered quite its share of attention. Plenty of Malaysians took to the post to condemn him for taking credit for Najib’s conviction.

“You are not worthy to comment or take credit on Najib. You took away the rakyat’s and nation’s sovereignty.”

Another commented, “Bad, incompetent people always claim credit for actions they did not commit, leaving the deservingly deserving individuals unheard of.”

Meanwhile, some users compared him to the group mate that always claims credit for the group assignment even though they did not contribute to the work.

Do you think that he has a point?
