Those who are placed under Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) areas should be vaccinated immediately, including foreigners, said Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh.

In a statement posted on 2 July, Hannah Yeoh urges for vaccination to be immediately given to the population in EMCO areas once they are tested negative for Covid-19, regardless of their citizenship. “Without diminishing the urgent need to vaccinate our citizens, I urge the Federal Government not to overlook the foreigners in our communities in our vaccination effort,” she stated.

When an area is under EMCO, frontliners move in and conduct tests on the people to contain the virus. Since they are already being stationed in EMCO areas, vaccinating the citizens under the areas would be effective use of existing resources and can prevent a repeat of EMCO in the same area in the coming days, according to her.

She also added that communities with a larger segment of foreigners like Kampung Sungai Penchala and Kampung Segambut Dalam specifically have recently been placed under EMCO because of the high number of infections in those areas.

“Under Minister Khairy Jamaluddin’s current vaccination program using MySejahtera for registration, persons without MyKad or Passports would not be able to register for it. the mobile vaccine program under Minister Annuar Musa is currently made available for Malaysians only,” she said. She added that this also explains why the EMCO areas are the highly populated places in Kuala Lumpur.

The lack of vaccination among the non-Malaysians will cause more infections, such as in the case of Kampung Sungai Penchala and Kampung Segambut Dalam where foriengers are being neglected, according to Hannah Yeoh. Therefore, to prevent the increase of EMCO areas and infections, she urges the Government to immediately send in their mobile vaccine trucks into EMCO areas, beginning with Kampung Segambut Dalam.

“The virus does not distinguish between a local and a foreigner,” she added. “Our priority during this time of the pandemic should be for the safety and health of every life – of our whole nation – this includes the lives of foreigners living in our midst.”.

As of 2 July, a total of 8,582,893 vaccine doses have been administred, with 7.5 percent of the Malaysian population fully vaccinated with both doses. Hopefully the vaccination process can be sped up and more people can get vaccinated as soon as possible, especially those under the EMCO areas.
