The supply of protective equipment for medical frontliners assigned to treat coronavirus patients in Sabah have reached a dangerously low state and out of desperation, doctors have turned to the public for help.

As new patients flood in the hospital daily, these medical professionals are left with no choice but to get innovative with the way they prevent themselves from contracting the virus. Doctors from Tawau and Kota Kinabalu are now gathering raw materials to create their own makeshift masks using sponges, stretch bands, fabric, plastic and whatever they can get their hands on to improvise during this critical health period, say sources from Sin Chew Daily.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Women’s and Children’s Specialist Hospital and Tawau Hospital are currently identified as the main three institutions in urgent need of supplies as they are designated for the treatment and isolation of infected Covid-19 patients in the state.

A fellow doctor from one such hospital who goes by the name Michelle said that due to the hospital’s limited resources, they had to find ways to make their own masks and provide protection for other frontline staff. Another instructor known as Shaz, disclosed that she received a request from a doctor working in Queen Elizabeth Hospital, KK, to collect and send materials to the hospital as soon as possible.

What they currently are in need of are: retractable plastic ropes, sponges and tapes, which are used to make disposable protective masks.

These hardworking and innovative frontline workers are doing all that they can to guard themselves so that they can keep working to treat infected patients. They constantly come into contact with the infectious disease to help those in need so if you know of anyone who is willing and able to help these brave real-life heroes in their urgent time of need, do donate to their cause.
