Not being able to fall asleep at night can be due to countless factors: you have caffeine in your system, you’re stressed out or anxious about something, you were on your computer right before bedtime, you took a three-hour nap just awhile ago, and the list goes on!
Well, regardless what the reason is, we’ve all been there, and we’ve all probably tried different ways and methods to entertain ourselves or to make ourselves feel sleepy. Here are some you’ll most probably relate to:
1. You scroll through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and then Facebook again
Sometimes you even spend hours just watching YouTube videos from your phone, in the dark. Before you know it, it’s 4AM. I relate to this on a spiritual level.
Well, doing so will lessen your chances at sleeping early and may instead increase your chances at wearing glasses.
2. Trying 2,987,349 different sleeping positions
It’s a never ending cycle! You try to sleep on your left side, then on your right, then you try laying flat on your tummy, sometimes you even try sleeping without your blanket, but nothing works. NOTHING.
3. You try making some Milo panas or some other hot drink for yourself
It’s a known fact that hot drinks – and even hot showers – helps the body relax and is usually encouraged before going to bed. Which is great, because now we have another excuse to whip ourselves up a glass of nice, hot Milo.
4. You pick up a book to read not because it interests you but because you hope it’ll put you to sleep
This tactic works, occasionally. Unless of course, the book you picked up happens to be interesting and you end up finishing the entire book at 6AM. #GG
5. You constantly look at the time to see how many hours of sleep you have left
Counting down the hours you have left to sleep is more stressful than watching a bomb go off. I mean, I had six hours of sleep left just 10 minutes ago!
6. You start thinking about why you can’t sleep, which then leads to thinking about every single mistake you did in your past and how you’re such a big failure in life
Laying in the dark with nothing to do can be a dangerous thing at times. It causes our minds to wander and think about unnecessary things that often cause us to feel anxious or depressed. Remember to always think happy thoughts! 😀
7. You completely give up trying to fall asleep and watch TV shows instead
If you can’t beat ’em, might as well join ’em.
8. Either that or you become extremely productive
Some of us end up finishing our assignments while the rest of us take this opportunity to clean our rooms/homes, since nobody is walking around and getting in our way. At least things get done!
Did any of these ring a bell? Well, next time before you head to bed, try taking a hot shower and avoid using your computer or phone at least an hour before bedtime! Maybe even avoid taking any coffee or tea (or even teh tarik!) after 3PM. Better safe than sorry!
Remember, getting at least eight hours of sleep every night is crucial if you want to stay alive and healthy longer!
