If you’re a happy resident of Petaling Jaya (PJ), then chances are you’re pretty much comfortable where you are and would never think of going out of your way to the city to lepak, let alone make KL your long-term abode. Well, unless you live walking distance to your workplace or something. As such, you will never fathom your friends’ arguments when they say KL has a lot more to offer than PJ.

To prove (y)our point, here are 8 reasons some people prefer hanging out in PJ compared to KL:

1. Cost of living

You’re a happy camper in PJ because let’s face it, everything is cheaper here! No crazy expensive parking rates, there’s a plethora of affordable (and delicious) food and most importantly, rent prices won’t cut your throat.

Some of our salaries can’t even pay half the rent of units in KL!

2. Lesser traffic jams

KL is notorious for its traffic jams, especially during peak hours, which is probably why you often think twice before heading to the city to meet up with friends.

3. There’s many shortcuts if you’re ever in a jam

Sure, PJ has got its fair share of traffic jams too, but they’re absolutely avoidable thanks to the numerous shortcuts and alternative routes available (with or without the assistance of Waze).

4. PJ doesn’t flood easily

Read: unlike SMART tunnel!

During heavy downpour, KL roads are very prone to flash floods, which subsequently leads to the already-heavy traffic jams building up even further.

5. Better selection of shopping malls

Chances are, your favourite shopping malls are located in PJ – think 1Utama, The Curve, Sunway Pyramid and Paradigm Mall just to name a few. Yes, yes, there’s KLCC and Pavilion in the city, but with most of their vendors being high-end brands, we think we’ll do wallets a favour by sticking to high street labels.

Or thrift shopping.

6. Cheaper parking rates

If you’re lucky, some places don’t even charge a single cent! Who doesn’t love free parking right? But if you do have to pay, don’t worry because parking rates here won’t give you a mini heart attack.

Plus, parking in KL malls come with a price too (literally), which is the exhorbitant parking fees. Just don’t resort to parking illegally ok? Later get fined.

7. Tastier food that’s not a tourist trap

If you’re looking for authentic local food that’s delicious, cost-friendly and convenient to get to, you can find them in PJ, not the heart of KL. After all, PJ houses all the best eateries without being overly flocked by tourists!

Why head to Jalan Alor when you can have the same hawker-style food in PJ right?

8. Cooler array of Insta-worthy cafes

Speaking of food, we’re pretty sure PJ also has a wider range of super good-looking cafes all around town! We reckon shoplot rent prices in KL are steeper, which is why most trendy cafes usually debut in the heart of PJ.
