A 57-year-old man jumped out of a window and ran into a nearby forest to escape from authorities near his home in Johor on 5 November.

Officers from the Johor State Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ) had gone to his house around 6 PM to carry out an arrest warrant issued by the Mersing Syariah Court.

His wife claimed that he wasn’t at home

According to JAINJ, when enforcement officers arrived at the scene, they surrounded both the front and back doors of the house, fearing the suspect might try to escape, as reported by Harian Metro.

The man’s wife, who answered the door, claimed that her husband wasn’t at home. Not convinced, the officers searched every room, including the closets, under the bed, and the bathroom.

During the inspection, the man suddenly jumped out of a window and ran into the nearby forest, believed to be out of fear of getting caught. JAINJ said officers tried to chase him but were unsuccessful.

He was previously arrested for buying 4D lottery numbers

The man had previously been arrested in 2020 for buying 4D lottery numbers, an offence under Section 18 of the Johor Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment, which carries a fine of up to RM3,000, a jail term of up to two years, or both.

The department said the man failed to show up for his hearing at the Mersing Syariah Court, which led to an arrest warrant being issued.

JAINJ has since urged him to turn himself in to the Mersing Syariah Court to settle the case.
