A 36-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion that she murdered her own newborn baby.

According to Coconuts, the suspect from Palembang, Indonesia, became pregnant out of wedlock, which is generally considered taboo in Indonesia. Her boyfriend then left her when he found out she was pregnant with his child.

Because she was ashamed that she became pregnant out of wedlock, she wrapped up the baby in cloth and hid it inside a washing machine a few hours after she had given birth on 4th November.

“I put the baby in the washing machine, but I didn’t set it to tumble. I just wrapped it in a blanket because I was ashamed,” she told reporters at a press conference as quoted by Detik.

She said that she had no intention to kill the baby as she planned to keep the baby in the washing machine only for a short while.

“My plan was to take the baby to an orphanage, I had no intention to kill,” she said.

The baby was discovered by her colleague at work who found it inside the washing machine after hearing its cries. The baby was then taken to a hospital where it was pronounced dead.

Meanwhile, authorities are conducting an autopsy on the baby to find out the cause of death.

The woman was charged with infanticide under Indonesia’s Child Protection Law, and may face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
