A 30-year-old man was sentenced to 5-month jail in Singapore yesterday (21 June) after pulling a knife on his landlord, threatening to kill her entire family and trying to strangle her.
The man, China national Li Xin pleaded guilty yesterday in court to one charge of criminal intimidation with intent to cause death and one charge of causing hurt by choking the 61-year-old woman’s neck.
As reported by Today Online, the man committed the offences after getting angry over the slow Wi-Fi speed in his house.
Li was playing his mobile game after drinking about six cans of beer and confronted the landlord, Lin Suhua over the slow internet speed, which escalated into a disagreement.
The offence took place on the evening of 16 May this year, whereby Li went to the landlord’s room to tell her about the WiFi speed.
When the disagreement happened, he took out from his shorts a knife with a blade measuring 14cm and pulled the landlord into his room where he slammed the elderly woman onto the bed.
Thankfully, the landlord managed to calm him down, at which point Li went to speak to another tenant, Su Ju.
A third tenant, Ji Zhaoliang then called Li to tell him that he had been waiting for him downstairs for 2 hours. The landlord then shouted to ask why Ji didn’t return home after work and told him to get back quickly.
Li then hung up the phone and answered the landlord’s query to Ji by saying, “because I told him I will be killing all your family and all of you.”
This death threat made the landlord fear for her safety and when Ji arrived home, the woman told him about her disagreement with Li and hinted that he had a knife with him.
Agitated by this, Li turned aggressive again and pushed the landlord onto the bed and tried to strangle her until Ji intervened and stopped him.
Even after the landlord returned to her room and locked herself inside, Li continued to pound on her door and shout for her to come out.
The incident finally came to an end when Su Ju’s employer arrived and called the police.
Li, who worked as a hotel housekeeper during the incident asked District Judge Lau Qiuyu to exercise leniency because he had allegedly been experiencing anxiety during his remand and anxious about the punishment that he would receive.
