Dialects are a part of who we are as Malaysians. Speaking Kelantanese when you’re not from Kelantan is already impressive. But when a foreigner speaks Kelantanese, it’s a whole new level of amazing!
In a recent video shared by @goleng120, a young foreigner is seen spending his final moments in Malaysia before returning to his home country.
Nigerian boy speaking fluent Kelantanese
In the video, a 14-year-old Nigerian boy impressively converses with a local man in fluent Kelantanese, explaining why he has to go back home.
Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Goleng shared that he and Muhamad, who prefers to be called Mat, are neighbours. Mat often prays at the surau near their house and sometimes he even serves as the call to prayer.
He was able to speak Kelantanese in less than 2 years!
Goleng went on to explain how Mat arrived in Malaysia 3 years ago to accompany his father, who took up a lecturing position at a local institution in Kelantan.
He became fluent in Malay, including the Kelantanese dialect, in less than 2 years. Goleng shared how Mat enjoys socialising and playing soccer with his friends, who are also his neighbours.
“Mat had to return to Nigeria last Friday because his father got a new job contract there. He enjoys many Malay foods such as rice, roti canai, fried noodles, local cakes, and he also appreciates a traditional Kelantanese food called budu.”
They treated him as if he was their own family
Goleng further described Mat as someone who quickly adapts to socialising and interacting with local residents, with his attitude making him easily accepted by the local community.
Goleng expressed his sadness upon hearing about Mat’s departure after nearly 3 years together, emphasising how they all treated Mat as if he were part of their own family.
“Before he returned to his home country, we organised a farewell ceremony and presented him with some souvenirs as mementos. Many of Mat’s friends feel saddened and touched by the need to part ways. He will be missed.”

Hopefully, we’ll be able to see Mat in Malaysia again in the near future. Until then, take care!
