At the time of writing (November 16), more food premises in Malaysia are doing their best to obtain the Halal certificates from JAKIM. Here’s what you MIGHT not be aware of.

A total of 57 percent, or 5,449 companies holding halal certificates, are non-Bumiputera entrepreneurs.

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Religious Affairs, Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar, said this figure was recorded from 9,520 companies registered as holders of the Malaysian Halal Certification (SPHM) as of 10 November.

“According to the latest records as of 10 November 2024, the total number of SPHM holders is 9,520 companies. Of this total, 5,449 companies are non-Bumiputera SPHM holders.”

As for Bumiputera holders, it involves 3,803 companies, accounting for 40%. The remaining three percent (268 companies) are foreign-owned SPHM holders.

In efforts to attract more Bumiputera entrepreneurs to obtain halal certification, Na’im said strategic cooperation with stakeholders such as MARA, the Bumiputera Agenda Steering Unit (TERAJU), the Malaysian Malay Chamber of Commerce (DPMM), and guidance agencies are carried out from time to time.

“One specific plan currently being implemented together with GiatMARA is to target an additional 12 GiatMARA centers to obtain halal certification for food premises by 2025.”

In a written reply on the Parliament website, Na’im added that JAKIM also plans to continue implementing the HoT programme at several identified locations in collaboration with MAIN and JAIN in 2025.

What do you think of JAKIM’s effort in the Halal certification matters?
