The puberty or teenage phase is notorious for being difficult to navigate for both parents and children. However, what about the preteen phase when children are transitioning into their teenage years?
This is when children start to become less vulnerable with their parents, which, if not addressed, could lead to strains in the parent-child relationship when the child becomes a teenager.
Recently, a TikTok video of a pair of mom and dad listening to their son tell them about his dream has gone viral.
The video shared by the mother, @marlynazhan, was captioned “progress to puberty”. She explained in the video that it had been 10 days after her son, Kashaf got circumcised and he was asking about why his dreams have been a bit weird lately.
“It’s about a woman exploring“, Kashaf said when asked what the dream was about.
Then, Marlyn did some rapid-fire questioning to understand the dream better. She asked questions like, “Is the woman pretty?”, “Long hair?” and “Black colour?”; all of which her son answered by nodding.
Then, the dad also joined in on the questioning and Kashaf revealed that the woman in his dream is a beautiful teenager.
“That’s a good sign you know, you’re growing up“, Kashaf’s dad assured him, adding that he had similar dreams when he just got circumcised too.
“We’re eager to explore the new world”, he said and Kashaf agreed enthusiastically.
Feeling her affection grow for her eldest son, Marlyn then said, “My son has grown up“.
Netizens praise the parents
In the comments, netizens praise Kashaf’s parents for how well they raised him. They were impressed by how they actively listened to him, asked questions, gave reactions where necessary and explained things to him.
“I love seeing this kid communicate with his parents. He looks like he’s comfortable sharing.”
“Not all parents have these skills to talk to their kids, especially when they are becoming teenagers. Children usually end up feeling embarrassed and wanting to be alone.”
“We try making our son feel like we’re friends so that he’s always comfortable sharing whatever he needs to share with us, even when he becomes an adult”, said Marlyn.
