A China flag on a rocket replica at an event in Tangkak, Johor, has caused tension, and Gambir State Assemblyman (ADUN) Sahrihan Jani said a police report has been lodged about the matter.

In a statement by Sahrihan posted on his Facebook page, the assemblyman said he supports the decision to cancel the permit of the organisers if they are proven to have violated the guidelines set by the City Council.

He also said that the matter should not end with a mere apology.

“I understand that the carnival will unofficially cease its operation on Thursday, December 26. However, an apology is not enough to cover this mistake.”

The report was made by the UMNO Youth in Ledang, which was led by Zahid Bin Ibrahim.

In his statement, Sahrihan has a reminder to other organisers out there – please don’t be insensitive.

“Please be more sensitive to the culture and not create any provocation that can cause chaos within the community. In the meantime, please be mindful when it comes to unity and the security of the country.”

He also voiced his support for strict action against the organiser, including taking legal action and bringing the matter to the court, as well as immediately ceasing the operation of the carnival.

“The community in Gambir highly values living in harmony and unity and respecting each other’s cultural customs and beliefs.”

“We also say no to any efforts promoting anything against the spirit of unity.”

In a report by Sinar Harian, Tangkak District Police Chief, Superintendent Roslan Mohd Talib, confirmed that the police have received a report about the matter and are currently investigating the matter.
