President Donald Trump announced a sweeping overhaul of US immigration policy and pledged to halt migration from “Third World countries”, strip federal benefits from noncitizens, and deport anyone he deems a burden or security threat.

In a social media post, Trump vowed to “permanently pause migration from all Third World Countries to allow the US system to fully recover,” without clarifying which nations fall under that label. Traditionally, the term refers to poorer, less developed countries.

Trump said he would cancel millions of admissions approved under Joe Biden, expel anyone “incapable of loving our Country,” and denaturalise migrants who undermine domestic tranquility.

He also promised to deport foreign nationals he described as “public charges, security risks, or incompatible with Western Civilisation.”

Afghan national behind shooting of soldiers

The president’s remarks came after two National Guard soldiers were shot near the White House on Wednesday, which resulted in one fatality. Authorities say the suspect is an Afghan national who entered the US under a special visa programme.

Hours after the incident, USCIS chief Joseph Edlow announced an indefinite suspension of immigration requests from Afghans and a review of green cards issued to individuals from “countries of concern.”
