At around 10 AM today (27 October), United States (US) President Donald Trump left for Japan after a one-day visit to Malaysia for the 47th ASEAN Summit.

And Trump was happy with his short trip to Malaysia. In his social media post shortly before he departed Malaysia, Trump said that he had ended his visit in Malaysia, calling the country “great and vibrant”.

“Signed major Trade and Rare Earth Deals, and yesterday, most importantly, signed the Peace Treaty between Thailand and Cambodia. NO WAR!”

Trump called Malaysia “great and vibrant” following official visit

In his Truth Social post, Trump pointed out that the signed peace treaty saved millions of lives, and it was his honour to be part of the important, major event.

The agreement, dubbed the “Kuala Lumpur Accord”, commits both countries to an immediate cessation of hostilities, the withdrawal of heavy weapons from conflict zones, and the start of joint de-mining operations.

It also provides for the release of 18 Cambodian prisoners of war and the deployment of ASEAN observers, including Malaysians, to monitor the truce.

Trump hailed the accord as a “momentous day for all the people of Southeast Asia”, praising the “courageous leadership” of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

He also credited Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is the Asean chair, for hosting the talks, saying Malaysia provided “a neutral place” that helped bring both sides together.

Trump also revealed that there had been a lot of phone calls between the four of them following the tensions between Cambodia and Thailand that erupted in July.

Anwar praised the agreement between Thailand and Cambodia during opening remarks at the summit, saying, “It reminds us that reconciliation is not concession, but an act of courage.”

Thailand will release Cambodian prisoners, and Cambodia will begin withdrawing heavy artillery as part of the first phase of the deal. Regional observers will monitor the situation to ensure fighting doesn’t restart, reported BERNAMA.
