This is a rare condition indeed!
A woman who is recognised by the surname Chen from Xiamen, China had developed a rare hearing condition which made her unable to hear men’s voices. Chen realized something was not right when she failed to hear her boyfriend’s voice, as reported by MailOnline.
According to Newsweek, it is claimed that Chen had suffered nausea and was also hearing “ringing” in her ears the night before.
After considering her condition, she consulted Dr Lin Xiaoqing, an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist at Qianpu Hospital. The woman doctor later discovered Chen to be suffering from low-frequency hearing loss which is also known as “reverse-slope hearing loss”.
This means that Chen will not be able to hear low-frequency sounds, including the average male voice. Lin claimed that Chen was capable of hearing her, but couldn’t hear when a male patient was talking.
“She was able to hear me when I spoke to her, but when a young male patient walked in, she couldn’t hear him at all,” said Lin.
It is said that this bizarre condition is difficult to diagnose. Most of the time, both patients and medics are unaware of its existence. Besides, genetics plays a role in triggering such hearing loss. This means that some people may have never been able to hear lower frequency sounds.
As for Chen’s condition, Lin explained that fatigue and stress could have caused Chen to suffer low-frequency hearing loss as she has been working late recently, giving her body an insufficient amount of sleep.
The ENT specialist revealed that she expects Ms Chen to make a full recovery soon and had reminded the public to treat such symptoms immediately.
If you experience any pain or anything unusual, do consult a doctor immediately.
We hope that Chen will make a speedy recovery from her hearing condition soon!
