Spoiler alert: There’s a new phone in town and it’s got me pretty hyped up!

Thanks to our buddies at Mi Han, I managed to get my hands on the upcoming OnePlus 6T! Being a tech geek myself, I was obviously pretty excited when this came into the office and of course, I had way too much fun playing reviewing it.

In case you’re wondering, here’s a visual representation of me when the phone arrived on my desk:

So, to fully test the phone’s capabilities and what it offers, I pit it against some Malaysian scenarios to see how it fares. Here’s my one week experience using the new OnePlus 6T.

1. Watching movies on the phone because we Malaysians love to Netflix & chill on-the-go

Whether we’re travelling back home from work or simply chilling at the mamak, we Malaysians obviously love to Netflix and chill anywhere we are. If you’re someone who owns a small phone just like me, then you’re in for a treat with the OnePlus 6T’s huge display.

Here’s what I loved:

  • Watching movies on a larger screen as my current phone’s screen only measures 3.5 inches. #sadlife
  • Watching all my shows and movies on the phone in high definition whenever and wherever I wanted due to the 6.24 inch AMOLED display
  • The OnePlus 6T’s screen-to-body ratio and its minimalistic tear-drop notch and slim bottom bezel which is 1.5mm thinner than the previous OnePlus 6.

Feature: 6.24 Inch AMOLED display.

Bonus feature: You can even hide the notch in the settings!

Let’s face it, one important feature we all look for in a phone is a great camera. How else are we supposed to up our Instagram game wei?

Just like for many Malaysians, a phone’s camera alone can make or break a purchase decision. Good thing is, I was pleasantly surprised by the photos I got out of the OnePlus 6T. I was having so much fun that even my colleagues got jealous and took the phone for a spin!

Here’s what I loved:

  • The night mode function which allowed me to capture night shots with minimal noise. It is also conveniently divided into two modes (handheld and tripod)
  • The phone was also smart enough to detect whenever a scene got too dark by automatically switching to the night mode whenever I was in low-light conditions.
  • Its dual 16-megapixel and 20-megapixel lens set up with OIS & EIS that are built-in the main shooter.
  • The 16-megapixel selfie camera which produced good selfies by blurring out the background.

Feature: Selfie camera, dual rear-end camera, and night mode.

3. When you want to unlock your phone but your hands are dirty from all the food you’ve been eating

Another common struggle we face as Malaysians is trying to unlock our phones when our hands are dirty with sambal, curry, and all the other delicious Malaysian food we eat. Don’t worry… we’ve all been there.

Luckily for us, some phones these days allow us to unlock our phones with just our faces!

Here’s what I loved:

  • The In-Display Fingerprint Screen Unlock as it made unlocking the phone super easy when it was lying on the table. Not to mention, it was also super quick as it only took about 0.34 seconds to unlock!
  • The face-unlock feature on the OnePlus 6T is the quickest one I’ve seen so far.

Seriously though, it barely took me a second to unlock the phone. Usain Bolt also lose wei!

Feature: Face-ID and Finger Print-on display.

4. Having to lug around a power bank because our phone always dies before our day ends!

Seriously, this has got to be one of the most frustrating things to happen especially when we’re expecting an important phone call. As such, many Malaysians resort to carrying a power bank with them to prevent our phones from dying on us.

Thankfully, this wasn’t an issue throughout my week with the OnePlus 6T.

Here’s what I loved:

  • Its beefy 3,700mAh battery which gave me a full-day worth of average use  — I only had to charge it when I got home.
  • Its super fast dash charging, which charged my phone to about 50% just within 30 minutes!

Trust me, you won’t be needing to lug around an extra power bank with this device as your daily driver.

Feature: 3,700mAh battery & Dash charging.

5. Playing games on the phone for hours only to have it lag during crunch time in a match

There is a famous saying amongst gamers: “Video games don’t make us violent, the lag does”. If you can relate to how frustrating it is to have a phone lag out on you when you’re gaming, then you will certainly appreciate the specs of the OnePlus 6T.

Here’s what I loved:

  • I was able to play games such as PUBG mobile lag-free due to the ultra-fast 845 Snapdragon and 8GB of RAM built-in.
  • Aside from playing games, I was also able to multitask without experiencing any glitches (opening multiple apps at the same time).

As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end, and so was my time with this flagship killer. Mi Han, can sponsor me one ah, pretty please? #shameless

Aside from the OnePlus 6T, I even got to listen to my favorite tracks with the OnePlus Bullet Wireless Earphones which is praised for its exceptional audio experience. The earphones are sold separately from the device.

Here’s what I loved about it:

  • Sound quality was great and I got a ‘punchy bass’ experience.
  • It fitted comfortably in my ears and I did not feel any uneasiness throughout long periods of usage.
  • I did not experience any hiccups in connecting to different devices.
  • It’s also super easy to charge featuring USB-C charging which gave me 5 hours of playtime with just 10 minutes of charge.

All things considered, I absolutely loved the OnePlus 6T and can honestly say that it fared well in all the situations I pit it against.

If you’re interested, you can purchase your device along with the official accessories from the OnePlus Official Store on Lazada and Shopee.

What’s more, the phone even comes with an attractive price starting at RM2,588 for the 128GB variant!

Here’s the breakdown of the prices on all OnePlus 6T variants:

  • 6GB RAM + 128GB ROM – Mirror Black (RM2,588)
  • 8GB RAM + 128GB ROM – Mirror Black/Midnight Black & Thunder Purple [coming soon] (RM2,888)
  • 8GB RAM + 256GB ROM – Midnight Black (RM3,188)

The device I received was the Midnight Black variant, which did a good job in repelling fingerprints and had a nice frosted finish.

Well, it looks like I know which phone I will be upgrading to next. Care to join me fellow Malaysians? 🙂
