“It’s going to get worse and worse and worse,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization about the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Let me be blunt, too many countries are headed in the wrong direction, the virus remains public enemy number one,” he said at a virtual press conference on 13 July at the WHO headquarters in Geneva.

As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to claim lives all across the globe, the WHO has warned that it will only get worse if countries fail to adhere to strict healthcare precautions, reported CNA.

More than 575,000 people in the world have died from the disease with over 13 million being infected and the number continues to increase rapidly with the United States of America recording over three million cases and Brazil recording over 1.8 million cases at the time of writing.

“There will be no return to the “old normal” for the foreseeable future. But there is a roadmap to a situation where we can control the disease and get on with our lives,” Tedros Adhanom said.

He added that in order to control this disease, three things are required:

  1. A focus on reducing mortality and suppressing transmission
  2. An empowered, engaged community that takes individual behaviour measures in the interest of each other
  3. Strong government leadership and coordination of comprehensive strategies that are communicated clearly and consistently.

“It can be done. It must be done. I have said it before and I will keep saying it.”

“We weren’t prepared collectively but we must use all the tools we have to bring this pandemic under control and and we need to do it right now.”

“Together we must accelerate the science as quickly as possible, find joint solutions to Covid-19, and through solidarity build a cohesive global response.”

This pandemic is far from over and the only way to control it is if we work together to flatten the curve in our respective countries.
