“We’re being condemned for giving strays a home” – Kajang Dog Shelter Responds to Viral Eviction Notice

Last Friday (19 September), a dog shelter in Kajang, Selangor, got an unannounced visit from the local assemblyperson (ADUN), along with about 30 people, including police and nearby residents, following complaints that waste from the shelter was being washed into the river.

Soon after, the shelter was handed an eviction notice ordering them to remove all their dogs immediately, citing issues of smell, disturbance, and the large number of dogs under their care.

“We’re being condemned for giving homeless dogs a place to live”

In a statement, the Malaysian Animal Welfare Association said they were also contacted by a police officer from Kajang Police District Headquarters (IPD) asking for details about the case.

“Right after the council left, LUAS (Selangor Water Management Authority) came to take water samples for testing. Honestly, we don’t know what’s going to happen next. The ADUN’s video has gone viral, and now we’re being condemned just for giving homeless dogs a safe place to live,” the shelter wrote.

They strongly denied the accusations, stressing that the river had already been polluted long before they set up the shelter.

“The only PVC pipe we installed was to drain out excess rainwater, because whenever it rains, our compound gets badly flooded. Back in September 2021, during the floods, the water had nowhere to go because of the concrete base along the fencing. That’s the only reason the drainage was built. In the past seven years, not a single villager has ever complained to us.”

“The thought of losing our dogs is unbearable”

The shelter has reached out to the local council for help, hoping to get some guidance on what can be done to resolve the issue.

“Moving to a new place is just not something we can afford right now, and the thought of losing our furkids is unbearable. We’ve spent years pouring our hearts into caring for these dogs, who would otherwise have no one.”

They’re now pleading for understanding, compassion, and support from the community as they try to weather the issue.
