DAP recently suggested “rebranding” Jalan Hang Tuah into Jonker Walk 2.0, but the traders in the area wanted to avoid another “Chinatown”.

UMNO Youth Chief, Dr. Akmal Saleh is also not on board with the idea of Jonker Walk 2.0 and thinks it’s irrelevant. In his Facebook post yesterday (January 31), Dr. Akmal said it’s wise to put the concept of the Malay culture to the utmost priority for the street.

“In Malacca, we have Little India on Jalan Bendahara, and we have Chinatown in Jonker Walk.”

“It’s better if we develop Jalan Hang Tuah by prioritising the concept of the Malay culture. Full stop,” Akmal said in his Facebook post.

The UMNO Youth Chief added that development would be better with the “1 Malaysia” slogan, a phrase made famous by former Prime Minister Najib Razak, who is currently serving a prison term.

Regardless of the development, Akmal also said that the most important thing for now is that the traders in the area can benefit from the development of the state’s economy.

Do you think the street should be rebranded into Jonker Walk 2.0?
